This summer I was able to participate in a week long residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice. This was such a wonderful and productive time! I was able to print a small edition of three books and a small edition of three relief prints during my time there. I was also able to squeeze in some time to see Venice and travel across Italy after the residency ended. Thank you so much to Lorenzo de Castro, Matilde Dolcetti, and Alessia De Bortoli for all your help and attention during my time in Venice! I can’t wait to go back!
A little pre-trip planning…cutting a small right angle on the laser cutter and making sure everything I needed fit into my backpack…
Beautiful shop! So many presses!
Matilde (lower left), Alessia (left) and the other artists at the shop getting together for a day of presentations and discussion…
Prints lined up to dry…
Putting together the accordion books…
Relief prints with original text on top and anagram text on the bottom…
The first time I’ve made books since graduate school…
No shop is complete without lots and lots of unique signage…inky fingers in clean hands spaces, universal printshop challenge…
These large banners were everywhere…protesting the gigantic cruise ships that constantly come into the ports…
Gouging the ink…another common challenge…
Fun to see Dracula make an appearance…
Beautiful aquatint test print…
And the INFAMOUS Ed Bernstein, printmaker extraordinaire from the University of Indiana…of course he would be on a sign in the shop!
I was also able to make time to see some artwork too! The Venice Biennial was a terrific show!
Quick trip to the Peggy Guggenheim collection…
And to the Punta Della Dogana…
I was also able to find a nice little comic shop tucked away in the narrow streets of Venice…
